Sunil Thomas, M.S., LMHC

I am a psychotherapist with more than 25 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. I help clients navigate emotional and relational challenges, with particular experience in anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns.

My approach is warm, compassionate, collaborative, practical, and nonjudgmental. I strive to create a comfortable space where clients can speak openly, including about difficult or sensitive concerns. I offer encouragement and support while also challenging clients when doing so can promote meaningful growth.

I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is essential to effective therapy. Clients need to feel genuinely heard and understood, but therapy involves more than listening. I help clients recognize patterns that may be keeping them stuck, develop healthier ways of thinking and responding, and take an active role in creating change.

Change is shaped by the choices we make. From an Eriksonian perspective, I believe people can discover new possibilities and choose different ways of responding, even when longstanding patterns or circumstances make change difficult. Whether change happens quickly or gradually, I meet clients where they are and provide practical tools, encouragement, and accountability as they move toward the life and relationships they want.

I have experience working with anxiety, depression, ADHD, anger management, bipolar disorder, grief, divorce, trauma and PTSD, infidelity, and marital and premarital concerns. My approach is integrative and individualized, incorporating principles from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, solution-focused therapy, and strength-based approaches. With children, I may also incorporate play-based interventions.

Couples and relationship work are also important parts of my practice. I have completed Level III training in the Gottman Method, along with additional training in the Developmental Model through the Couples Institute, Relational Life Therapy, and approaches from the PACT Institute. I help couples understand relationship patterns, improve communication, navigate conflict, repair emotional disconnection, and develop healthier ways of relating.

Background

I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with a minor in Philosophy, from Palm Beach Atlantic University and my Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Nova Southeastern University.

My professional experience includes Broward House, the Institute for Child & Family Health, the Chrysalis Center, Kids In Distress, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Through these settings, I have worked with culturally diverse individuals and families facing a wide range of emotional, behavioral, relational, and life challenges. My experience has included supporting individuals in recovery, children involved in foster care and their families, and Native American children and families.

I have also spent more than ten years in private practice. Across my career, working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and life circumstances has strengthened my commitment to culturally sensitive, individualized care.

Above all, I view therapy as a collaborative process. My goal is to help you understand yourself, develop practical tools, recognize patterns that may be holding you back, and make intentional choices that support meaningful and lasting change.
