Different Therapy Approaches We Use at Dr. Coral Arvon and Associates

At Dr. Coral Arvon and Associates, we understand that every individual and every couple is unique. There is no “one size fits all” approach to healing relationships, reducing anxiety, or improving emotional well-being. That’s why our therapists are trained in a variety of evidence-based therapy approaches designed to help people reconnect, heal, communicate more effectively, and create healthier lives and relationships.

Below are some of the therapeutic approaches we use in our practice.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a structured, goal-oriented, scientifically based approach to relationship counseling developed from decades of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman.

The Gottmans studied long-term, happily married couples to better understand what makes relationships succeed. Through this research, they identified specific behaviors and patterns that strengthen emotional connection, trust, friendship, intimacy, and communication.

Gottman therapy helps couples:

• Improve communication
• Increase respect and affection
• Rebuild trust
• Learn healthier conflict resolution
• Strengthen emotional intimacy
• Better understand each other’s inner emotional world

One important aspect of Gottman therapy is learning that not every disagreement can be completely solved. Some conflicts are ongoing and rooted in personality differences or life experiences. Rather than trying to “win,” couples learn how to manage conflict in healthier and more constructive ways.

When working with a Gottman-trained therapist at Dr. Coral Arvon and Associates, couples learn practical tools that help calm difficult conversations, reduce defensiveness, and create stronger emotional connection.

Relational Life Therapy (RLT)

Relational Life Therapy (RLT) was developed by renowned psychotherapist Terry Real. This powerful relationship approach focuses on helping couples move through cycles of harmony, disharmony, and repair.

RLT therapists believe many couples struggle because they never learned how to properly repair emotional disconnection after conflict. Over time, unresolved hurt can lead to resentment, loneliness, disillusionment, or emotional withdrawal.

Relational Life Therapy helps couples:

• Identify unhealthy relationship patterns
• Learn healthier communication skills
• Develop deeper intimacy and compassion
• Repair emotional wounds
• Take meaningful and decisive action

One of the core principles of RLT is “loving confrontation.” This means the therapist compassionately helps each partner recognize behaviors that may be damaging the relationship while also teaching new ways to connect and communicate.

RLT also explores family-of-origin experiences and how early relationship dynamics continue to influence adult relationships today. Through this process, couples can break repetitive cycles and create stronger emotional bonds.

Imago Relationship Therapy

Imago Relationship Therapy is a unique and insightful approach to couples counseling that helps partners better understand how childhood experiences shape adult relationships.

Developed by Dr. Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Imago therapy is based on the idea that many of the emotional experiences and unmet needs from childhood unconsciously resurface in adult relationships.

The word “Imago” is Latin for “image,” referring to the unconscious image we develop early in life about love, connection, safety, and relationships.

Imago therapy helps couples:

• Reduce blame and criticism
• Improve empathy and understanding
• Transform conflict into opportunities for healing
• Improve emotional communication
• Deepen connection and intimacy
• Rediscover emotional safety within the relationship

Rather than seeing conflict as purely negative, Imago therapists view conflict as an opportunity for personal growth and healing. Couples learn how to listen differently, respond more compassionately, and understand the deeper emotional needs beneath their reactions.

At Dr. Coral Arvon and Associates, Imago therapy can help couples reconnect emotionally and build more conscious, fulfilling relationships.
